Internet of Things and its Applications

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the billions of interconnected devices around the world connected through and to the internet using Wi-Fi or censors. IoT finds several applications in computer science and engineering makes for a vital component of the computer science syllabus in most of the M Tech colleges in Pune. Smart devices are useful to collect data called big data which can be analyzed to discover valuable insights and patterns.
IoT connects everyday smart devices such as: phones, cars, refrigerators etc. With a decrease in costs, IoT is becoming accessible to a larger audience. Every year a wealth of new IoT devices astonish and amuse us; connected diapers that give information on when a baby needs to be changed, pillows to help stop snoring and so many more. It’s not just things that make up IoT- it’s the devices along with insights obtained from data and the action taken as a result of these insights.
Big data finds heavy usage in predictive analysis and helps determine the best way to market to a customer. Many organizations collect large amounts of data but are unable to use this to get the most out of it. Data scientists and computer science engineers are in high demand due to their ability to mine data and help companies take decisions to increase profits.
IoT is also used in businesses for detecting and troubleshooting issues remotely, predicting maintenance needs, tracking production line efficiency, and monitoring devices. These activities have a direct and significant impact on a company’s revenue. IoT is seeing rapid growth as more businesses are relying on it for operations.
In the coming years IoT is predicted to be used for building smart cities which will have parking sensors connected to mobile apps enabling drivers to find open parking spots, video cameras on smart streetlights, weather sensors, and even gunshot detection devices. Cities will benefit in terms of energy efficiency and cost reduction with IoT solutions. A smart city will also be a safer city with better traffic regulation, emergency systems that are more efficient, and faster police action.
Forward thinking engineering institutes which include some of the best engineering colleges in Maharashtra address IoT’s significance and application as part of their computer engineering course owing to its wide adoption and application in the way we go about our daily lives in the years to come.
